</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">Two new experiments, one involving people and the other animals, suggest that regular exercise can substantially improve memory, although different types of exercise seem to affect the brain quite differently. The news may offer consolation for the growing numbers of us who are entering age groups most at risk for cognitive decline.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">It was back in the 1990s that&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10195220" style="color: #326891; text-decoration: none;">scientists at the Salk Institute</a>&nbsp;for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., first discovered that exercise bulks up the brain. In groundbreaking experiments, they showed that mice given access to running wheels produced far more cells in an area of the brain controlling memory creation than animals that didn’t run. The exercised animals then performed better on memory tests than their sedentary labmates.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">Since then, scientists have been working to understand precisely how, at a molecular level, exercise improves memory, as well as whether all types of exercise, including weight training, are beneficial.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">The new studies provide some additional and inspiring clarity on those issues, as well as, incidentally, on how you can get lab rats to weight train.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">For the human study,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23509628" style="color: #326891; text-decoration: none;">published in The Journal of Aging Research</a>, scientists at the University of British Columbia recruited dozens of women ages 70 to 80 who had been found to have mild cognitive impairment, a condition that makes a person’s memory and thinking more muddled than would be expected at a given age.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">Mild cognitive impairment is also a recognized risk factor for increasing dementia. Seniors with the condition develop Alzheimer’s disease at much higher rates than those of the same age with sharper memories.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">Earlier, the same group of researchers had found that after weight training, older women with mild cognitive impairment improved their associative memory, or the ability to recall things in context — a stranger’s name and how you were introduced, for instance.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">Now the scientists wanted to look at more essential types of memory, and at endurance exercise as well. So they randomly assigned their volunteers to six months of supervised exercise. Some of the women lifted weights twice a week. Others briskly walked. And some, as a control measure, skipped endurance exercise and instead stretched and toned.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">At the start and end of the six months, the women completed a battery of tests designed to study their verbal and spatial memory. Verbal memory is, among other things, your ability to remember words, and spatial memory is your remembrance of where things once were placed in space. Both deteriorate with age, a loss that’s exaggerated in people with mild cognitive impairment.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">And in this study, after six months, the women in the toning group scored worse on the memory tests than they had at the start of the study. Their cognitive impairment had grown.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">But the women who had exercised, either by walking or weight training, performed better on almost all of the cognitive tests after six months than they had before.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">There were, however, differences.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">While both exercise groups improved almost equally on tests of spatial memory, the women who had walked showed greater gains in verbal memory than the women who had lifted weights.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">What these findings suggest, the authors conclude, is that endurance training and weight training may have different physiological effects within the brain and cause improvements in different types of memory.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">That idea tallies nicely with the results of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22155655" style="color: #326891; text-decoration: none;">other recent study of exercise and memory</a>, in which lab rats either ran on wheels or, to the extent possible, lifted weights. Specifically, the researchers taped weights to the animals’ tails and had them repeatedly climb little ladders to simulate resistance training.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">After six weeks, the animals in both exercise groups scored better on memory tests than they had before they trained. But it was what was going on in their bodies and brains that was revelatory. The scientists found that the runners’ brains showed increased levels of a protein known as BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which is known to support the health of existing neurons and coax the creation of new brain cells. The rat weight-trainers’ brains did not show increased levels of BDNF.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">The tail trainers, however, did have significantly higher levels of another protein, insulinlike growth factor, in their brains and blood than the runners did. This substance, too, promotes cell division and growth and most likely helps fragile newborn neurons to survive.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">What all of this new research suggests, says Teresa Liu-Ambrose, an associate professor in the Brain Research Center at the University of British Columbia who oversaw the experiments with older women, is that for the most robust brain health, it’s probably advisable to incorporate both aerobic and resistance training. It seems that each type of exercise “selectively targets different aspects of cognition,” she says, probably by sparking the release of different proteins in the body and brain.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">But, she continues, no need to worry if you choose to concentrate solely on aerobic or resistance training, at least in terms of memory improvements. The differences in the effects of each type of exercise were subtle, she says, while the effects of exercise — any exercise — on overall cognitive function were profound.</div>
<div style="font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.4375rem; margin-bottom: 1em; max-width: 540px;">“When we started these experiments,” she says, “most of us thought that, at best, we’d see less decline” in memory function among the volunteers who exercised, which still would have represented success. But beyond merely stemming people’s memory loss, she says, “we saw actual improvements,” an outcome that, if you’re waffling about exercising today, is worth remembering.</div>

Once you’ve established where you are at and where you’d like to be, you can determine how much and what type of training you’ll need to do. A fitness test can also be a gauge of overall health. A qualified coach or personal trainer can do a fitness assessment – which typically includes tests of agility, strength, flexibility and your VO2 max (a measure of how efficiently your body transports oxygen through the body).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"></div>

A heart rate monitor allows you to track improvements in your cardiovascular fitness over time, helps you to pace yourself during long workouts or races and can serve as a personal trainer of sorts —motivating you to push harder to build fitness.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">3)&nbsp;<b style="border: none; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Stretch</b></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">Reduce the chance of injury by improving flexibility through stretching. It can be as simple as dedicating 10 to 15 minutes of post-workout time to a consistent stretching regimen, or incorporating a regular (hot) yoga class into your weekly training schedule. Improved flexibility can also lead to better overall performance (for example, a tight Achilles tendon can reduce your foot and ankle’s full range of motion). Already suffering from an injury? Stretching specific muscle groups can help with injury rehab and to reduce the rate of recurrence.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">4)&nbsp;<b style="border: none; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Cross Train</b></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">Training for a triathlon next summer? Instead of logging endless miles indoors on a bike trainer, why not hit the trails for a solid session of cross country skiing? Cross training is a great way to alleviate boredom that sometimes comes with sport-specific training and can also help to reduce the occurrence of overuse injuries by giving your body a break from repetitive movements. Cross training is also a great way to stay fit while rehabbing from an injury (consider water running as an alternative to pavement<br />pounding, for example).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;"></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">5)&nbsp;<b style="border: none; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Improve Technique</b></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: none; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Century, Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">Oftentimes athletes get into bad habits that can be hard to break. Consider reducing your training volume and instead focus on improving technique. Even a slight modification to your swim stroke or the way you’re pedalling your bike can dramatically improve your speed, without having to increase your mileage. For gym workouts, consider hiring a personal trainer for a few sessions to work with you on reclaiming your perfect squat form.</div>

<div></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I have been playing Ultimate Frisbee on and off since university intramurals. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Though I am steadily improving, my skill level still hovers somewhere between advanced beginner and intermediate .&nbsp; I stick with it since it’s a great way to run around, enjoy time with friends and simply have fun.&nbsp; We all feel so much happier once we arrive on the field at the end of our workday, to “toss a disc” warming up for our game.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Ultimate Frisbee was started by a group of high school students in the late sixties and has now spread internationally.&nbsp; It’s a bit like Frisbee soccer/ football, in that the main objective is to pass the Frisbee among team members until someone catches it in the goal area.&nbsp; If&nbsp; a player drops the “disc” ,&nbsp; the other team gets the Frisbee and the movement goes the other way, toward to other goal area.&nbsp; Each point starts with the two teams of seven facing one another from each end of the field.&nbsp; One team throws the disc to the other team (“offence”) and defends by attempting to block passes, initiating a turn-over of the disc.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Players are expected to be honest in calling fouls and out-of-bounds etc.&nbsp; and<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">thus there are no referees in competitive ultimate Frisbee, just “observers”.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It is a simple, accessible, light-hearted game that is slowly making its way to high schools again. &nbsp; There are leagues and pick – up games just about everywhere…<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">so if you are curious, there are lots of opportunities&nbsp; to try it out.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div></div>

Also, slow, deep yogic breathing increases oxygen flow, which leads to optimal functioning of all your organs—including your brain.&nbsp; A study of the physical effects of yoga on new practitioners found that the <em>parasympathetic nervous system</em>—the part of the nervous system that promotes relaxation—kicked into high gear around three months after starting yoga.</span>

Pilates in the 1920s, is a system of core-strengthening moves done on a mat or an apparatus called a Reformer. Study participants who did Pilates on a mat twice weekly for 75 minutes or three times a week for 50 minutes, for 15 weeks, were less likely to experience troubled sleep.&nbsp;&nbsp; These sleep improvements may be linked to an increased bodily awareness.</span></div>

<div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Researchers found that after a single 30-minute session of stationary <strong>cycling</strong>, subjects reported a boost in their energy levels. We tend to think of physical activity as being tiring, but in fact physical activity adds energy to our lives. Research shows that </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: italic; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">any </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">kind of exercise done <em>outdoors</em> <em>may boost energy more than indoor activity does. </em></span></div>

<div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">In one study, older adults who did simple, low-intensity<strong> weight-training</strong> exercises three to five times a week for one month performed significantly better on cognitive tests.&nbsp;&nbsp; Specifically, the weight-training group <em>improved in executive function</em>, which includes the ability to plan, regulate behavior, and multi-task.</span></div>

<div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">In <strong>Tai Chi</strong>,&nbsp; traditionally done in a standing position, you repeatedly shift your weight back and forth, engaging the muscles in both your upper and lower body, as well as employing rhythmic breathing. </span></div>
<div><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">Because the shifts are slow and fluid, they relax your muscles and calm your mind while improving your balance, strength, and flexibility. &nbsp; This “meditation in motion,” as it is sometimes called, is said to stimulate the body’s flow of what the Chinese refer to as Chi (pronounced </span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: italic; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">chee</span><span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;">), or life force. <div><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Adequate Vitamin D levels help you . . . </b></span></div>
<div></div>
<div>1.&nbsp; <b>Eat less and feel more satisfied</b> &nbsp; &nbsp; Vitamin D levels are linked to leptin, the&nbsp; hormone that tells the brain&nbsp; you are full so stop eating.</div>
<div></div>
<div>2.&nbsp; <b>Store less fat </b>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Vitamin D slows the body&#8217;s cells&#8217; storage of fat.&nbsp; With High Vitamin D, less parathyroid (PTH) and calcitrol hormone are produced. These hormones promote the body&#8217;s fat storage.</div>
<div></div>
<div>3.&nbsp; <b>Lose belly fat</b><b>&nbsp;&nbsp;</b>&nbsp; Studies at the Univeristy of Minnesta and Laval showed that vitamin D triggers fat loss primarily around the belly.</div>
<div></div>
<div>4.&nbsp; <b>Lose weight and help your heart</b>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Studies show that vitamin D is linked to higher weight loss&nbsp; and decreasing cardiovascular risk factors such as serum triglycerides.</div>

<div>A.&nbsp; <b>Be outdoors on sunny days </b>&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Note however, that sunscreen, air pollution and season affect the amount of Vitamin D your body will create a form of Vitamin D that lasts twice as long in your bloodstream than vitamin D derived form supplements or food.&nbsp; Also, be careful to limit sun exposure in order the minimize risk of skin cancer and skin&nbsp; signs of premature aging.&nbsp; </div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>B.&nbsp;<b> Supplements &nbsp;&nbsp;</b> There is a lot of controversy concerning this.&nbsp; Some North American medical institutes recommend 600&nbsp; IU&nbsp; per day.&nbsp; However, there is growing evidence that 1000 &#8211; 2000 IU is optimal for most adults in northern climates.&nbsp; For those who are overweight, some studies indicate&nbsp;</div>
<div>that 2000 &#8211; 4000 IU is needed, since with obesity, more Vitamin D is trapped and less goes into the bloodstream.&nbsp; </div>
<div></div>
<div>Vitamin D supplements are not a substitute for dietary sources,&nbsp; since foods often contain complementary nutrients, such as calcium and omega &#8211; 3 fatty acids&nbsp; that contribute to weight loss.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div><o:p></o:p></div>
<div>C.&nbsp; <b>Dietary&nbsp; sources</b></div>
<div></div>
<div>a.&nbsp; <i><b>fatty fish such as salmon and mackeral</b></i> &nbsp;&nbsp; They also contain Omega &#8211; 3 which works together with Vitamin D to promote weight loss and inhibit cancer cell growth. Wild salmon can contain up to 4 times more Vitamin D than farmed salmon.</div>
<div></div>
<div></div>
<div>b.&nbsp; <i><b>fortified Dairy products</b></i>&nbsp; :contain&nbsp; vitamin D,&nbsp; calcium and leucine which all promote fat burning and muscle growth.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>c.&nbsp;<i><b> </b></i><i><b>omega &#8211; 3 fortified eggs&nbsp;</b></i> contain omega &#8211; 3 fatty acid&nbsp; and vitamin D work together to facilitate weight loss.&nbsp; </div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b>How I got hooked</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">After college, I backpacked around Europe for almost a year. &nbsp;I decided to take up jogging since it is an&nbsp;<b>efficient work-out</b>&nbsp;which requires no gym, instructor, class, pool, partner and<b>&nbsp;no equipment other than running shoes</b>. &nbsp;I started my day with a run, so that I just took one shower and felt fabulously cheerful and clear-minded all day.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Although getting started was a slog, I soon looked forward to my daily jogs and became accustomed to my happier post-run days. &nbsp;I was hooked (on anandamide <img src="http://laughingsherpa.ca/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" class="wp-smiley" /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I have run almost everyday since that trip, including through medical school, internship and psychiatric residency. &nbsp;Though I am not a &#8220;morning person&#8221;, I rose at 5:00am to fit in a short jog before arriving at the hospital at 6:30am, during&nbsp;surgery rotations. &nbsp; It helped me be more focused for my work.&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>A run has become a bright foundation for my day.</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b><br /></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b><br /></b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b>Healthy Habit</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Currently, I live across the street from a boardwalk overlooking the ocean and mountains: the perfect place for a daily run. &nbsp; When I was injured after a bike accident, I hobbled along my running route. &nbsp;Dozens of people, who I did not recognize, stopped me, &#8220;What happened? &nbsp;I see you running here everyday.&#8221; &nbsp;</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Running can be a good form of transportation. &nbsp;I often jog to work or for errands.&nbsp;Patients tell me they see me running, noting I practise what I preach.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">While travelling, my running route helps<b>&nbsp;check out a new neighborhood</b>&nbsp;and entices me to explore parks and paths I may not otherwise find.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I have met new friends and sparked romances** &nbsp;while on my daily runs, in my hometown and abroad.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b>Races</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">For years, I aspired to run a&nbsp;<b>marathon</b>, but thought it was impossible. &nbsp; In &nbsp;2002, I joined a friend running the Ottawa marathon. &nbsp;My goal was to run 42km, even if I had to crawl to finish line.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">I completed it, (partly with his group&#8217;s pace: &nbsp;run for ten minutes then walk a minute) in a bit over four hours. &nbsp;Later in 2002, I joined another friend for the Victoria, B.C. marathon. &nbsp;By omitting the walking portions, my overall time improved by almost half an hour. &nbsp;Since then, I have run a total of seven marathons, including the Boston marathon. &nbsp; I am really, really proud of meeting this challenge.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b>Beginning</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">As long as your doctor ok&#8217;s it, it&#8217;s&nbsp;<b>easy to start running</b>. &nbsp;Wear good quality running shoes and appropriate clothing. &nbsp;Begin with jogging for a few minutes and then walking for a minute. &nbsp; After awhile, the periods of jogging will be easier and longer, the walking less frequent. &nbsp;<i>Personal trainers usually recommend running 4 -5 times a week, balanced with other aerobic activities and weight-training.</i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><i><br /></i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><i><b><br /></b></i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"><b>Try it!</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;"></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">Whenever people tell me they have taken up running, I am so happy for them. &nbsp;Friends report their runs are empowering, helping them stay slim, eat better, keep away from too much alcohol and think more clearly. Running can change your life, sparking a boost for&nbsp;<b>self-esteem</b>,&nbsp;<b>a healthier body</b><b>, sharper mind</b>&nbsp;and oodles of&nbsp;<b>joy</b>.</div>
